Pasadena, CA (PRWEB) June 2, 2011 - The Pasadena Bar Association hosted a Speech Scholarship Tournament at Law Day. The competition took place in the Gold Room at the Pasadena Convention Center, where the Pasadena Bar Association awarded two high school students with significant scholarships. The two finalists were honor student Joelle Cheng, a junior, attending Maranatha High School and Stanford-bound David Lam, a senior, from San Gabriel High School. Cheng was awarded the winner with a $5,000 scholarship, as Lam received runner-up honors and a $2,000 scholarship.
Cheng and Lam, won the opportunity to compete at the Pasadena Bar Association's Law Day and speak in front of 150 judges and lawyers, by being named the top two speakers at last April's preliminary round. Approximately 50 students representing local high schools, submitted applications to compete in the speech tournament. Each competing student presented a seven-minute speech, choosing from a list of three selected topics including Internet Privacy, 21st Century Technology, or Freedom of Speech.
Regarding the two finalists, Vice President of the Pasadena Bar Association, Donald P. Schweitzer said, "We could not be happier with the performance of both finalists. Joelle and David rose to the occasion and actually improved their speeches from when they spoke during the preliminary rounds in April."
The Pasadena Bar Association has been organizing this event since last summer with expectations that the association can make a positive impact on local high school students and their ability to speak in public.
"By hosting this event the Pasadena Bar Association did something special for the competitors and our community," said Schweitzer.
